Blindfolds and Methelated Spirits
October 2nd, 2006 by Nick VerwymerenIt twas my birthday on Friday and a surprise it was! I was pretty much the only one uninformed about what Fridays events held. Everyone here on base was well aware of what Sara had planned for me. The day started with breakfast at Sara’s house then off to work we went. She created a treasure hunt leaving notes and clues that led to others. Each envelope I found included an encouraging note from different people on base. The last clue told me to be ready at 5.45pm at my house.
Sara picked me up at my house in Brian and Carmell’s car and hastily proceeded to blindfold me with a sweatshirt. We stopped at what I guessed as Woolworths (which I was right) and I waited in the empty car for several minutes. Sara came back flustered and allowed me to take off the blindfold. She said she was looking for methelated spirits and couldn’t find any. I suggested checking out a store called ‘The Warehouse’ and alas they had what she was looking for.
Blindfolds…mineral spirits…this had me really guessing what was going on. We pulled into Brian and Carmells place and had a wonderful fondu dinner there (the methelated spirits were for the fuel). After being stuffed full of artichoke, beef, and prawns Sara casually asks where I wanted to go for dessert. I shrugged my shoulders and said I was up for anything. Brian and Carmell had some ‘other plans’ for the night so they had to drop us at another friends (Luke and Ang) place to pick up their car.
Ang was sitting in her living room when we walked in and she spontaneously asked if I’d seen the new gazebo they set up in the backyard. It took me no convincing and before they knew it I was on my way out the door to see the new setup. The minute I walked out the door I was almost taken off my feet to a large host of people yelling SURPRISE!!! To which I replied ‘I’ve never had a surprise party before.’
After several moments I was handed a present and told that many people had contributed to it. I slowly ripped it open to unveil a small black box. As I flipped it over I couldn’t believe my eyes, it was an iPod. I just really couldn’t believe the whole night, it really was amazing. I know Sara put so much effort and planning into it and it all really payed off. It is definitely a birthday that will not be forgotten.
I will hopefully post some photos soon on my flickr site when I get them.
