Reasons for the Season

December 9th, 2008 by Sara Verwymeren

I’m trying desperately to think of something to write that’s funny or insightful about what Nick and I are up to lately. I have to be honest, I don’t have much.  But as I sit here, I can only think of what I’ve been thinking all week.

I am so blessed.

Lucky, blessed, fortunate – whatever you want to call it, we’ve got it.  Almost daily now, friends  have been handing us envelopes with gifts, sauces that we like, cheeses we like, groceries we need…every week, we are being given to and provided for.  There’s something to be said about communities like the one we live in – we will never be without.

For so many people, this is the toughest time of year.  They want to be where they can’t be or can’t get to. They want to say things they should’ve said long ago. They want to give things they can’t afford to buy – people just want to bless.

I guess that’s reminiscent of what this whole holiday is about, isn’t it? I mean, sure, we get caught up a bit in the presents and the Santa stuff. But for the most part, people want to give this season. People don’t walk into stores and spend thousands on themselves (ok, I’m not condoning debt here) – they are desperate to give.

And isn’t that what Christ did? Bring the greatest gift on earth? This whole holiday stemmed from the fact that God gave his son who then gave us a relationship with the Father, giving us eternal life.  It’s all about giving!

I know that this time of year brings joy to God’s heart, regardless of people’s view of Santa. People are getting together with the ones they love to celebrate life and to enjoy it to the fullest. That’s what Christ brought – life and life to the fullest.

We hope you have the most wonderful Christmas season and if you know that there are ones in need around you, what a perfect opportunity to give to them practically and to share the gift of Jesus.

God bless and Merry Christmas

love, the Verwymerens
